In my work with families I work from a systemic view point, viewing the family as a system instead of separate entities.

Even if one family member is struggling with a difficulty it affects the entire famiy.  Therefore, family counseling can often be a useful tool in assisting the whole family in learning skills to support each other and communicate openly and honestly, bringing a family closer together.

I believe when working with families it is important that everyone have a voice in the counseling process. This allows me to view each member's feelings and perspectives and to observe family interactions. 

Family difficulties can develop from internal and/or external causes.  Therefore in our work together we must identify whether or not the problem is internal or external and then attempt to identify how the problem is being maintained.  For example:  conflict between family members may be maintained by patterns of interaction.  This would be a problem that is being maintained internally.  We would then work together to change the interaction patterns so that the conflict could be alleviated. 

Every family has internal strengths.  Therefore in working with your family, I assist you not only in identifying the specific challenges and the patterns that are maintaing them, but the strengths and skills to overcome them and make long-lasting changes.
